ATHLETE REGISTRATION GOES LIVE THIS WEDS, JULY 21, 10AM MST
Salt Lake City, UT, July 14, 2010--The highly anticipated first stop of the 2011 Freeskiing World Tour (FWT) arrives at El Colorado, Chile, for The North Face Chilean Freeskiing Championships Presented by Smirnoff, in just one month. Freeskiing's elite will battle it out in the Andes snow August 19-21, for the CFC title, overall World Tour points, and a $10,000 cash purse.
El Colorado, Chile, is proud to be part of the Freeskiing World Tour, said El Colorado General Manager Aldo Boitano. "We are the biggest and oldest ski resort in Chile, and we will give our best to make this event one of the most important freeskiing celebrations on the planet. We have a great passion for our mountains and also for the FWT."
The venue at El Colorado is one of the most unique in all of freeskiing. "It's the sickest terrain in El Colorado with spectator access like no other location in freeskiing--you can literally drive a car up to a viewing area at the bottom of the venue," said MSI's South American Partership Manager Rodrigo Medina. "The terrain is much like the finals venue at Revelstoke, B.C.,--big, steep, wide open and no trees. Perfect for fast, flowing skiing, and littered with cliff drops of every size."
And so far, with two meters of snowfall so far this year, conditions are shaping up to be ideal for a competition mid-August.
"I'm ecstatic the FWT is coming to El Colorado because I've been skiing this mountain all my life," said 2009 South American Freeskiing Champion Chopo Diaz. "I know the venue will be a truly challenging for all the skiers. Chileans love this event and we will make all the athletes feel at home."
Last year, in the first year back to South America in 10 years, we had huge crowds, overwhelming athlete attendance, and talented locals who dominated the podium," said MSI Competition Director Bryan Barlow. "This year, just over the ridge from last year's venue in La Parva, El Colorado will host an even larger, more exposed venue. I'm excited to see what will happen with more competitors, larger terrain, ample snow and five thousand cheering Chilean fans."
