Main Event Day 1 of the Freeskiing World Tour & Masters of Snowboarding went off today. Eighty-six competitors hiked the ridge of Headwater to test their skills in some of Big Sky’s most challenging terrain. Riders who made the cut in their category will move on to Finals.

Judges Recap—

From Michele Manning, veteran big mountain ski competitor and legend to the sport.

“Crystal’s skiing was clean, fluid and strong. She always stands out amongst the competition.”—on Crystal Wright, women’s ski. Wright is celebrating her 10th year competing in the Freeskiing World Tour.

“You could tell that Hazel really thought out her run and planned it turn by turn. She executed it skillfully and stuck to her gut, it was a solid performance.”—on Hazel Birnbaum, women’s ski

From Paul Herberger, Big Sky local who skied on tour from 1998-2011 and has been judging professionally for 11 years.

“Randy was a clear standout. He skied really well with a lot of energy. His run was super clean.”—on Randy Evans, men’s ski. Evans is a Bozeman local.

“Simard was the only one who didn’t crash after the ‘lily pad’. As a junior who made it through the Qualifiers, that was really impressive—The ‘lily pad’ is notorious for it’s rocky, downhill take off. You add that to a super hard landing, there is no room for error.”—on Sidney Simard, men’s ski junior

The snowboarding judges were impressed by the fluidity from Abe Greenspan.

From Gareth Vandike, former U.S. champion with 20 years of competitive snowboarding experience.

“Abe used the natural features to his advantage—he took a sick line, crazy tail to nose butter at the top. He kept it fluid even with a fall. His line choice forced him to really commit.—on Abe Greenspan, men’s snowboard

“Mica landed a huge drop and stuck to the fall line, top to bottom. He is a solid competitor and keeps getting stonger.”—on Mica Brownlie, men’s snowboard
